Our History

T. Masters and Sons has a deep and rich history. Discover the very beginnings of our establishment within the industry to where we are today.

1896

Thomas Masters established an iron foundry and coal distribution company on Glover Street, West Bromwich. As the foundry’s importance grew, it soon surpassed the coal business, driven by demand for engineering castings and the expansion of metal refining industries across the Black Country and Birmingham.

1920s - 1940s

From the 1920s to the 1940s, Thomas was joined by his eldest son, Tom, and later by his much younger brother George, who was 18 years his junior. Both sons pursued education at foundry college, further enhancing the company’s capabilities and helping to shape its future in the metalworking industry.

1950s

In the 1950s, George recognised the need to automate the labour-intensive ingot production process. He designed a small conveyor to transport moulds, solidify and discharge the ingots into collection bins, with the first machine delivered to a copper smelter in London. The straightforward design proved highly successful, launching a product line that continues to thrive today.

1960s

During the 1960s, the company’s main site on Glover Street was compulsorily purchased by the council for housing, prompting a move to an existing foundry site on Sams Lane, just a mile away, which became the company’s headquarters for decades.

The third generation joined the business when George’s son-in-law, Philip White, came on board. Together, they formed a strong partnership that expanded the company's export market while further developing its presence in the UK casting market.

As demand for casting conveyors grew, the company required additional space, leading to the purchase of a second site in Salem Street, Tipton, in 1963, where fabrication and machining operations were relocated. This expansion marked a pivotal point in the company’s evolution.

1970s - 1990s

From the 1970s to the 1990s, rapid growth in export markets across Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East established T. Masters and Sons Ltd as a world-renowned name in the secondary metal refining industries. The company's global reach helped it weather multiple economic recessions, with a significant percentage of orders coming from international markets.

In 1989, a fourth generation joined the business when Philip's son, Stephen, came on board, followed shortly by design engineer, Andy Weaver. Together, they formed a new team that built on the foundations set by their predecessors. This new leadership modernised production systems, expanded the product range, and grew the customer base, driving the company's continued success into the future.

2000s

In the 2000s, tough market conditions led to a restructuring of T. Masters and Sons Ltd, centralising operations at the Tipton site, where the company remains today. Despite these challenges, many long-standing customers, both in the UK and export markets, have continued their partnerships with the company for decades.

Expanding beyond its core in the metal refining industries, the company has successfully diversified its customer base, now providing products to sectors such as car manufacturing, food production, power generation, and maritime industries. This evolution has allowed the business to continue thriving in a dynamic market.

T. Masters and Sons Ltd takes pride in serving a wide range of clients, from small owner-managed businesses to multinational blue-chip companies, maintaining strong relationships across all industries.
